Cyber security careers in Germany: skills, salary and how to get in
Cyber security specialists protect systems, networks and data from attacks. The field covers many roles, from monitoring alerts in a security operations centre to testing systems as a penetration tester or advising companies on security and compliance.
What does a Cyber Security Specialist do?
What you do depends on the role, but most security work falls into detecting attacks, preventing them and responding when they happen. Typical tasks include:
- Monitoring security alerts and investigating suspicious activity, for example in a SOC
- Finding and fixing vulnerabilities in systems, networks and applications
- Hardening servers, cloud accounts and identity and access management
- Responding to incidents: containing an attack, analysing it and documenting what happened
- Supporting compliance with standards such as ISO 27001 and requirements from regulations such as NIS2
Skills employers test for
Security interviews tend to be practical: how would you investigate this alert, where is the weakness in this setup, what do you do first in an incident.
Networking fundamentals
TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, firewalls and how traffic moves. The base for almost every security role.
Operating systems
Linux and Windows administration, logs, permissions and how attackers abuse them.
Security monitoring
Reading logs, working with a SIEM and telling real attacks from false positives.
Vulnerability assessment
Scanning, common web vulnerabilities such as the OWASP Top 10, and judging risk.
Cloud and identity security
Securing accounts, roles and configurations on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
Scripting
Python, Bash or PowerShell to automate checks and analyse data.
Cyber Security Specialist salary in Germany
According to the Bundesagentur für Arbeit, half of all full-time employees in the occupation "Cyber-Security-Consultant" earn more than €6,680 gross per month and half earn less.

How to become a Cyber Security Specialist
Many security specialists come from IT administration, networking or software development. Others start with a degree or further training in IT security. Practical, hands-on experience counts for a lot.

Questions about becoming a Cyber Security Specialist
Can I get into cyber security without a degree?
Yes. Many employers value practical skills, experience and recognised certificates as much as a degree, especially for operational roles. Some public-sector and consulting roles do require a degree.
Which cyber security role is best for beginners?
Many people start in a security operations centre (SOC) or in IT administration with security responsibilities, then specialise.
Are security certificates worth it?
They can help you pass CV screening, and some roles require specific ones. Employers still test practical skills in interviews, so combine certificates with hands-on experience.
Do I need to speak German for security jobs in Germany?
It depends on the employer. Many international companies work in English, while public-sector roles, critical infrastructure and many mid-sized companies expect German.
